Welcome to my electronic portfolio. You will have an opportunity to become acquainted with the projects I’ve been involved with as a graduate student at San Francisco State University (SFSU). In the past three years, I had the honor of working with members of several diverse communities. I’ve worked with diverse communities like the LGBTQ, children and adults of an Oakland daycare center, and the San Francisco Department of Public Health city employees, where all have enriched my experience as a health educator. This experience has given me the ability to employ innovative strategies, which are rooted in promoting health and social justice in the urban communities and beyond. I have always been particularly interested in advanced study in the field of Public Health, which has enabled me to develop a stronger understanding of the health and social issues that continue to impede the growth of a healthier and more vibrant Black community. Through additional study, continued action and dialogue with others interested in the field of Public Health, I hope to acquire more diverse strategies and tools to effectively address the social and health issues that impact Black communities both locally and globally. I am particularly interested in the effects that joblessness, hoplessness, worthlessness, and incarceration has on Black males and how it disrupts the structure of the family. It can help me to better understand the many external forces that have destroyed so many families. I also plan to explore and research alternative holistic approaches to combat poverty, violence, HIV/AIDS, racism and the internalization of racism by Blacks that too often leads to a self-hatred of one’s Blackness. I believe that many of the solutions must begin by instilling in our children and youth an appreciation of Black historical and cultural contributions. The distorted misrepresentation of Black History and contributions in mainstream U.S. culture tends to create a great deal of frustration that often leads to social and cultural instability. I am committed to finding constructive remedies to help Black communities heal from centuries of colonization, exploitation, and the dehumanizing forces that continue to contribute to the negation of Black humanity and spirit. My academic background at SFSU Africana Studies Department and SFSU Health Education Department has both provided me with an array of skills to identify, examine and address the multiple health factors in many disadvantaged communities. In addition to my academic experience, my professional experience has fueled my knowledge on linking theory to practice as I address the needs in urban and disempowered communities. While much of my experience is within disenfranchised and disempowered communities in the United States, I am also compassionate about the need to assist those suffering in many villages throughout Africa. With the experience gained at San Francisco State University, I plan to serve as a vital part of a community or health organization. More importantly, serving in Black, Latino, and Native American communities in changing our conditions, and how we view one another. I welcome your questions and suggestions as you journey through my site. Kra (Thank you) Javarre@gmail.com
